Taking care of the feet that take care of you
Managing diabetes is a lot of work, and your feet are often the last thing on the list, but they shouldn't be. It takes a village to stay healthy, and your feet need to be part of that village's daily routine.
Why your feet need extra attention
Diabetes can mess with the feeling in your feet and slow down how fast cuts and sores heal. That means a little problem can turn into a big one before you even notice it's there.
Your daily checklist
- Look your feet over, top to bottom, every single day
- Wash and dry them well, especially between the toes
- Moisturize (but skip between the toes)
- Trim nails straight across
- Check inside your shoes before you put them on
- Never go barefoot, even around the house
When to call or click
What if I find a sore or cut? Don't wait. If it's not clearly healing within a day or two, come see our podiatrist.
How often should I have a diabetic foot exam? At least once a year, more often if you've already got nerve or circulation issues going on.
What happens at the appointment? A straightforward check of your feet, your circulation, and your nerve sensation, so we can catch anything brewing before it becomes a real problem.
