Bunions: What They Are, What Helps, and When to See a Podiatrist

That Bump at Your Big Toe Has a Name

If you've got a sore, bony bump on the side of your foot that gets crankier every time you squeeze into a nice pair of shoes, you're not alone, and plenty of our neighbors in Brigham City are dealing with the very same thing. The good news is that there's a lot we can do about it.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the joint at the base of the big toe. As the big toe leans toward the second toe, the joint gets pushed out to the side, and the bump gets bigger and more tender over time. It's not extra bone sprouting out of nowhere. It's a change in how the bones of your foot line up.

What Causes Bunions?

  • Foot shape that runs in the family
  • Tight, narrow, or pointy shoes
  • Flat feet or other foot mechanics that put extra stress on the big toe
  • Years of being on your feet, on the job, at home, or on the trail

When Should You Get It Checked?

Don't wait until it's unbearable. Come see a podiatrist near you if:

  • The bump is red, sore, or swollen
  • Your big toe is leaning toward the other toes
  • You can't find shoes that feel good anymore
  • The pain is getting in the way of work, walking, or the things you enjoy
  • You've got a callus or sore where your toes rub together

How Do We Treat It?

Surgery isn't always the first step. Early on, a few simple changes can make a real difference:

  • Shoes with a wide, roomy toe box
  • Pads or cushions over the bump
  • Shoe inserts or orthotics recommended by your podiatrist
  • Ice after a long day on your feet
  • A little break from the activities that make it flare up

Bunions don't fix themselves, but catching one early gives us more ways to help you stay comfortable and on the move. If it's gotten to the point where pain keeps winning, we'll talk through every option together, including surgery, so you can make the call that's right for you.
